Books for Inspiration

One of the purposes of GeneratY is to share information regarding Generation Y. An important element of information is books. Many books have been written solely to explain Generation Y. However, there are also books written that touch a philosophy or way of thinking which suits Gen Y quite well.

All the books discussed below are in our opinion very interesting and are definitely beneficial for either Generation Y itself, or for anyone working with this generation.

Y in the workplace

“Y in the workplace – managing the ‘me first’ generation” describes the characteristics of Generation Y and how managers should cope with these. It provides managers guidance in leading and managing this new generation. It also offers millennials a clear view of the prejudices that exist regarding Generation Y that can help them in the workplace.

It is definitely a book we recommend to read if you want to have more details on Generation Y and especially how they fit in the workplace.

Steve Jobs – de biografie

The one and only authorized biography of Steve Jobs. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and intense personality of a creative entrepreneur.

Steve Jobs is by many millennials seen as the rolemodel of their generation. In the book, Steve Jobs often touches on the current culture within the corporate world and explains how he thinks it should change. It often fits the philosophy of Generation Y, which explains quite well why Apple is one of the most popular organizations to work for.

Generatie Einstein is opgegroeid.

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

Most people believe that the best way to motivate us is with rewards like money–the carrot-and-stick approach. That’s a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink in Drive. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does-and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation–autonomy, mastery, and purpose–and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Results from many surveys show that Generation Y is not satisfied anymore by money. They need a meaning, social responsibility, personal development. This book shows exactly what is missing in corporations today. If you want to attract young talent, and make sure they are happy within your company, read this book and do something about it!

(Dutch) Ja-maar… Omdenken

The Alchemist

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The Alchemist tells the story of a young man, looking for happiness and passion. Something very familiar for Generation Y. The book tells beautifully about the importance of “the journey” and how we should treasure it. We definitely recommend it!

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

In “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, author Stephen R. Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service, and human dignity — principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.

Although this book is not really aimed at Generation Y, it does provide a general guidance of how Generation Y wants to be managed. If you are managing young people this book is absolutely recommended.
